Canada's top dog breeds from 2020 have been revealed and there's a newbie on the list

The number 1 spot remains the same but there's a new contender in the top 10.

We all have our favourite dog breeds, but have you ever wondered how yours match up with the rest of Canada?

Well, now you can find out as Canada's top 10 dog breeds from 2020 have been revealed, and there may be a few surprises. The list, complied by The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the primary registry for purebred dogs in the country, only takes into account pure breeds, so you won't find any of your favourite mixes in this particular ranking.

However the number one breed in Canada still follows many lists of its kind with the Labrador Retriever reigning supreme. For the 26th consecutive year, the loyal and affectionate family dog takes the top spot, and it's no surprise as their sweet and easy-going nature makes them one of the most popular breeds worldwide.

It was a close second for the Golden Retriever, which managed to knock the German Shepherd Dog down to third place for the first time since 2012. Kind, happy, loyal, affectionate and active, Golden Retrievers thrive in most households, and they love a good outdoor adventure making them a great choice for Canadians.

Coming in just behind was German Shepherds, with this highly intelligent and loyal breed adored by dog lovers all across the wide. Not only do they make gentle family dogs, but they are also known for their willingness to put their life on the line in defence of their loved ones. While the Standard Poodle, French Bulldog, and Shetland Sheepdog continue to hold the same places as last year, the Australian Shepherd jumped two spots to take 7th place, pushing the Havanese and the Bernese Mountain Dog further down the list.

Surprise new entry

In an unexpected shake-up, that perhaps won't seem too unexpected at all to Vancouverites, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel took 10th place this year, knocking the Bulldog off the list. With their silky coats, large, round eyes and a gentle, endearing expression that would melt any dog lover's heart, this tiny breed is gaining a lot of popularity and is expected to climb higher on this list in 2021.
